When you first find out that your child has Hip Dysplasia and needs surgery, its hard not to think the worst. You're usually instantly fearful, your skin goes cold and clammy and your heart skips a beat under the stress.
This is common in all of the parents I've spoken to, but they also say that children are amazingly strong, usually stronger than they are, and they get through it quickly.

What's not easy however, is what to do for the three to six months that they're stuck in a Spica cast. Three to six months is a very long time; that's like the whole of Spring and the whole of Summer.
You can sit them on a Bean Bag for some things like eating dinner, use a modified car seat to get around, but the majority of the time they're bored and demanding.
But its not just their frustration that's the problem, it's the demands on your attention which are continuous and for the entire time they're awake. You need to move them where they want, get the toy they want and it all has to be done NOW, or all hell breaks loose.

You can't focus on a phone call without being disturbed, you can't get your tasks done before your called to do some other menial task. All day long you have continuous interruptions, breaking your concentration, losing your focus, every task now takes three times longer than it should. And this will be your life for the next 3 to 6 months.
It's impossible to focus on your job if you work from home
If you work from home it becomes almost impossible to focus on your job. You'll miss your deadlines and most likely miss out on any future jobs because of it.
And it's not even their fault, they didn't ask for this and they dont understand why they can't move. They resort to dragging themselves along the floor, rolling like a tortoise stuck on its back. It's heart breaking to watch, which means you get up and help them.

Because no two Spica Casts are the same, we make each and every Playskate by hand to fit each unique Spica cast. And after your finished using it, we collect it and dismantle it back into its component parts where each part is inspected and recycled.
Worn or scratched parts are broken down further into there smallest elements to be recycled. A wheel can be melted down into base metal for recasting, before being rebuild into a wheel for reuse. Every part is cleaned and sterilised and reassembled into components to be used to build the next custom Playskate.
Not only do we protect the environment by recycling the Playskate parts, we're able to hire it to you at a fraction of its actual cost. If you bought one instead, it would cost you thousands, would be too small for your child within a year and would be too specific to your child's Spica Cast measurements to sell. It would end up unused in a storage cupboard, eventually to end up in a landfill which neither of us want.

Accelerated Manufacture
Speed of production is a priority for us as each Playskate is bespoke and made to order and is usually needed within 10 days of surgery.
There are 5 stages to making your Playskate:

Let us know the surgery date so we can schedule your place in the production queue to make sure we get your Custom Built Playskate to you as quickly as possible.
Measure your child's Spica Cast
After the surgery is complete we need the measurements of the Spica Cast. You will receive an email with detailed video instructions on how to take the various measurements of your child's Spica Cast.
Board Production and Manufacture
When we receive the measurements, we'll create a detailed CAD drawing of your Plakskate to send to the board manufacturer who use a computer controlled board shaping and routing system to create an accurately shaped and sized board.
Production
When we receive the shaped board, it's sanded, treated and coated. The cushions are hand made, then the Playskate assembly is completed. after quality control and testing, it's packed up ready for shipping.
